Set against the rolling hills of Northland, Whangārei Villa explores contemporary rural living through a series of sculptural gabled forms and two contrasting interior narratives. From dark, retreat-inspired luxury to a softer, family-oriented palette, the project reveals how atmosphere and materiality can completely transform the architectural experience.

The dark interior proposal reimagines the rural villa as a secluded luxury retreat. Influenced by boutique hospitality and refined Art Deco detailing, the spaces are defined by deep tonal contrasts, dramatic stone surfaces, sculptural lighting, and carefully framed views of the surrounding landscape. The result is an atmosphere that feels cinematic, intimate, and immersive — balancing rural simplicity with elevated contemporary luxury.
